“Art has the role in education of helping children become like themselves instead of more like everyone else.” - Sydney Gurewitz Clemens
I believe: As an educator it is my sole responsibility to explore students capabilities, create a positive learning environment, tailor the curriculum to what best suits the individual learner, generate creative thinkers and doers, and promote an educational experience that will lead the individual to their greatest potential. I believe that every student has the capability to be successful. It's a matter of finding their strengths, curating curriculum that benefits their learning style, and giving them the confidence, and opportunity, to be their best selves. In my educational experience, I was a vessel. Continually filled with unquestionable information and my success was based on how well I regurgitated that information. For my students, I want to create a progressive and open learning environment. Students will be encouraged to question what they’re learning, and to try something new. I want students to realize their individual strengths and capitalize on what makes them unique and what they have to offer the world. Through the arts I believe students develop deeper connections to the STEAM curriculum. My plan is to facilitate and develop lesson plans with fellow art educators, and educators throughout the school combining our resources ensuring student success all across the board.
Promote an individualized lesson plan
Find the individual strengths of the student, and develop material that will push them to their greatest potential
Create an environment where students have a choice in how they want to develop their projects and encourage trying new things
Show students a variety of artists, and artists that come from the same background as the students
Open and progressive learning environment
Give students the tools and techniques, not the finished product
Ask them what they want to learn - how they want to develop their art
Generate open discussions in the class to develop critical, and creative thinking.
Curriculum Connections
Meet with fellow educators and discuss how art can be another tool in developing understanding of their curriculum
Create a variety of art projects that coincide with STEAM curriculum - see the results of combining our resources.
